policy debate with the president. this mitt romney needs to debate the old mitt romney as well. on each of these things he's taken the opposite position. there's an extended criticism of the president's take on syria, for instance. yet this is the same mitt romney who also said getting involved with libya would be mission creep. he opposed that in one country and now proposes it somewhere else. the point of consistent for him is israel. to pa are a phrase joe biden every foreign policy sentence has a noun, verb and the word israel in it. when it comes to the actual position saying a president needs to be involved in the middle east, it's drifted, that's true about the peace process. this is the same mitt romney, i believe, who was taped talking about the 47% and said, you know, when it comes to the middle east it's never going to happen. i will leave it to the next guy. >> we have that. let's listen to what mitt romney. almost literally said to kick the can down the road. this is part of the infamous 47% videotape taken surreptitiously in florida this year. let's listen to what he said

the winner win? can a good debate performance erase months of a campaign? about three hours ago mitt romney took a foreign policy swipe in what will be billed as a big speech. >> the president has failed to offer the tangible support that our partners want and need. i know the president hopes for a safer, freer and more prosperous middle east allied with us. i share this hope, but hope is not a strategy. the greater tragedy of it all is we're missing a historic opportunity to win new friends who share our values in the middle east, friends fighting for their own futures against the same violent extremists and evil tyrants and angry mobs that seek to harm up. >> right now the president is speaking at the national headquarters of the united farm workers union in california. does any of this really matter? do the polls matter? do ads, nearly a billion dollars worth matter? do all the campaign appearances tell the tale? we asked that with our team plus a friend of the show dr. john nan allen from politico. >> prish the intro. >> we have 29 days to go, and we know almost nobody decides based on

frankly in the past debate. one of the other things we're talking about this week is the fact that romney seemingly in what he laid out in the past debate on his tax cuts, what he's saying and the reality of his plan don't add up. the president wasn't able effectively say to him, you know, you haven't been specific on the deductions. he did not directly challenge mitt romney, and one of the things looking forward this week interesting to see is whether joe biden is able to turn to paul ryan in that way and say, your math doesn't add up. give me one specific deduction. in some ways i think with joe biden and paul ryan it's going to be an even more damaging conversation if ryan has to obviscate and come up with specifics because he's the numbers guy. >> he's going to be prepared. we'll be prepared. >> he doesn't have enough time it to answer the question, but going back to the theme of the day, what matters, the economy always matters. ever since the cold war it's been about the economy with the possible exception of '04, right? we're in the war of terrorism. >> even in '04 the exit polls s

confidence mitt romney on the trail. >> we had a little debate earlier this week and i enjoyed myself. you had the chance to hear his answers or non answers. now, of course, days later, we're hearing his excuses. >> but while the romney campaign body language has changed, both are anxiously awaiting the first good post debate polls. those will give us our first look at the race after the debate and the friday unemployment report. plus, where will romney be when the results of those polls begin to come in. will he be in coin flip races in places like ohio, iowa and wisconsin? where will the president's number be? still sitting at 49 or 50 or have fallen down to 47, 48? national tracks are one thing. battleground states are another. tuesday, romney stumps virginia, then ohio with chris christie in cuyahoga falls. in three straight rallies in florida, he recounted his memories of a 14-year-old boy, david, that he befriended with leukemia. >> i sat down next to him and he said what happens next? and i spoke with him about what i believe happens next. clear eyes, full heart, can't lose. david c

(laughter) >> and some of the excuses to try to explain the president not being much better than the empty chair that clint'swood revealed to us were simply bizarre. al gore thought it was the altitude of denver. i think the former vice-president may have been a little high. but the most ridiculous excuse of all was offered by yet another left wing obama, on another network and this guy with a straight face suggested that obama didn't debate well because he was black. what? you mean after getting elected president of the united states, and serving almost four years, barack obama suddenly walked out on the stage and said, oh, my gosh, i'm black, i can't take on this white guy. look, whether in sports, music, acting or politics, some days you just don't have a the juice, but we squeezed out what we could from the debate and i'll offer my hum

that obama had a bad debate, didn't do what he was supposed to do but mr. romney lied. >> bill: you are absolutely right. again, i compared romney's debate performance to the ryan speech in tampa. it was a good performance but it was packed with lies. i think the entire media was focusing on stage craft and performance or entertainment or acting ability and not on the substance of what they said. on the substance of what he said mitt romney simply did not tell the truth about the $5 million, about health care, about a whole lot of stuff. kevin in chicago, kevin getting rid of big bird good idea? >> caller: yeah, my granddaughter is four years old, so i'm ul up to speed on big bird. and it brings back memories of when my kids were young. >> bill: same here. >> caller: it is just an example of the crap that comes out of his mouth. they don't realize the value of putting something on tv for the kids to watch -- >> bill: and learn, yeah. >> caller: and the whole industry that has spawned off of it of the kids toy, and everything -- >> bill: you got it. big bird is a

an aggressively dishonest debater to show it. and that is what we got with mitt romney. >> many people are saying that what they saw was that governor romney that they have known all along and has been the problem in the past and they haven't seen that person. that he finally emerged during the debate. >> so you think that he lied through his teeth when he said he was going to cut taxes for wealthy people? >> he is the etch-a-sketch guy who has transformed himself and quite frankly, we always have to wonder which mitt romney is going to show up. if you just lay out lie after lie after lie about your own plan, as well as what the president has been talking about, of course you can look good. megyn: joining me now is chris stirewalt, host of "power play." i wanted to get back to january of 2009 when president obama in a common about immigration. joe wilson, shouted out, you lie on the floor of the house. watch this. >> there there are those that claim that our reform efforts would ensure illegal immigrants. this, too, is very false. the reform -- the reforms i am proposing would not apply to those

. the romney team tried to take advantage of some newfound energy in that debate. ann romney, part of the gop's super saturday grassroots effort. she made a surprise appearance at an orlando call center. she joined volunteers working on the phones in the campaign's push to reach out to 2 million voters this weekend. while there, ann romney met one campaign worker who made more than 100 30,000 calls on governor romney's behalf. there are two remaining presidential debates, and one vice presidential debate. the two remaining presidential debates happen next tuesday, october 16, then the following monday, october 22. this thursday we go to kentucky for the vp debate. the following week, where do we go? they are traveling all over. it is in long island. right across the way. we will be looking forward to that. the vice presidential debate, they go against each other again sometime. fox news alert. israel stepping up its military defense just 48 hours after a mystery drone penetrated airspace. planes shot down aircraft over the weekend. israel is blaming the lebanese militant group hezbollah. and

. romney at the first debate? >> well, this isn't the first time, if that's the case, and, indeed, shall we say he had kind of a loose relationship with the facts coloring them to favor his own side, and the question is does it matter at this point when we already know that about 95% of the voters have made up their minds and their feelings about the candidates are pretty well baked in. the people watching now are what we call the low information voters. they can't help it, they're busy with other things perhaps, but they're catching up to the campaign now, and they're going by first impressions, and they might not be that familiar with all the context of the figure that is romney is quoting, and this was where president obama could have done a better job of responding on the spot, but i guess he didn't want to appear rude. >> indeed. okay. i should point out that the gallup tracking poll today does have the president five points ahead, but the pew poll, as i said, has mitt romney ahead by four points. anna marie, speaking of those debates, do you have any doubt that paul ryan is going to g

the president for their third and final debate on the topic of foreign policy. earlier today mr. romney visited the ji military institute to deliver what his campaign described as a major address on foreign policy and to try out some new fear-flavored zingers focused on the middle east. >> it's clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office. i know the president hopes for a safer, freer, and more prosperous middle east allied with us. i share this hope, but hope is not a strategy. >> but even after today's tenth major foreign policy address by mr. romney, questions remain about how he would conduct american policy toward the rest of the world. how about libya? >> in the libya i'll support the libyan people's efforts to forge a lasting government that represents all of them, and i'll vigorously pursue the terrorists who attacked our consulate in benghazi and killed our fellow americans. >> okay. now that he's both favored and deposed intervention in libya, he'll defiantly claim his position is exactly the same as the president. great. how about ir

the new romney in this debate was that he was clearly trying to overcome the 47% problem which sam talked about by talking about empathy, i care, people are suffering and giving examples of people, the teacher in las vegas. he made it personal and did what democratic candidates normally do. chris: the right who asked him to make all these commitments throughout the campaign to ensure he's a conservative, they know the commitments and are they interested in him doing well instead of keeping the commitments. >> you'll have a contingent on the far right that are purists and don't want to hear any strain from that ideology and even if it means he loses, they're willing to go down with the ship. i think most people on the right and center right realize, ok, we have a shot at this now, let's do the best we can, let's shore it up and relax a little and let him do what he needs to do. chris: i think they've got a lot of leash out there for a guy who wants to win. >> they love anything that hurts barack obama more than life itself. chris: speaking of which, andrea, i want you to talk about this in

for mitt romney on the heels of his performance in the first presidential debate. several new polls show him closing the gap between him and president obama. how big of a jump in the polls are we talking about here? >> reporter: po to put it safely here, mitt romney closed the gap. keep in mind, heading into last week in that debate, mitt romney was trail is trawling in several key battleground states and national limit what won't to do is show you some of the polls we were looking at today and with four weeks to the elect, this is cause for fresh concern among the obama campaign and look at this. we're going to start with gallop. gallop before the debate asked voters who was ahead. at that point, obama, 50%; romney, 45% and drop below here and look at what they say now after that first debate. 47% to 47% gallop tonight has it in a dead heat. you might look at that and say, hey, it's one poll and maybe it's a napshot of the race. several other major polls came out and saying almost exactly the same thing. look at this. we'll go up to the next debate and this is the rasmussen presidential

that that debate has really, really helped mitt romney. >> yeah, i don't think the romney campaign could have wanted to do any more with this debate than they did. if you look across the board at these numbers, wolf, romney has made gains in almost every area including somebody who's better able to improve the jobs situation. he leads -- romney leads obama by eight points on that. so whether it's on the economy, whether it's on leadership, he's now tied with the president. as far as leadership ability is concerned. so i think romney got everything out of that debate and more. >> he certainly did. and if you take a look at -- let me put the numbers back on the screen one more time. earlier this month before the debate, romney was behind the president, the president, 51%, romney, 43%. eight-point difference. now 49% for romney, 45% for obama, a four-point spread. that's a 12-point spread in only, what, three weeks, shall we say? and clearly the major development was his strong performs at that debate. >> you know, wolf, it just shows you that voters are still really weighing the pluses and minu

probably wishes he could have had back. and many fellow democrats felt romney bent the truth in the debate but was never called out and i asked if it was the moderator that bungled that or the president. >> i think the moderator has that job. >> it's upo the president to defend himself? >> absolutely. i am not trying to say the president should not take responsibility for his awful performance, he should have. but i think the criticism to the moderator is also justified. >> go ahead, hanna. >> what the liberals are doing is post debate spinning. it's whining. there's no whining in politics. one person should have challenged what romney was saying and his name is barack obama, and he did not do it. i agree with lz. it was a bit of both. it was a lot of both. president obama was way off, and mitt romney was very much on his game. you know, i don't remember many debates where it's hard to think of a memorable gaffe or a memorable knockout blow, and yet there was a very visible mark that was an undebatable victor of the debate, and it was mitt romney. he did it because for 90 sustained minutes
